Time for some brain food
I guess I am a product of being introduced to an age of film that started in 1984 with a flimsy wooden transmitter and something called ON TV. Before my six year old eyes were bloody, F bomb fueled delights like "Scarface." Then I advanced in age and it was stuff like "The Bad Lieutenant" with Harvey Keitel moaning and wailing and sucking up as many substances as humanly possible in a ninety minute span. My point is, I think I'm a film watching child of F bombs and breasts and violence of the highest order. I'm sitting there watching a Hollywood classic called "Treasure of Sierra Madre" and I'm almost going through withdrawals because Bogey's demise is handled in such a clean and non nihilistic way. I wanted blood damn it, I wanted something straight out of Paul Verhoeven's "Robocop" where the gang of thugs unload on poor Murphy (Peter Weller) until one of the guys quips that he's out of ammo. I guess the only way to break this cycle is to go cold turkey and wean myself on the classic era of cinema for awhile. No more stylized Quentin Tarantino bloodbaths, no more torture porn flicks masquerade as horror films. Yes Eli Roth, I'm talking to you. No more bad guys doing CGI flips with unlimited rounds, no more exploding kill shots. It's time to embrace my classic film roots. More Bogey and Bacall, more classic cinema like "Casablanca" and "The Big Sleep." I need to embrace my classic cinema watching self, I need to get used to film technology of the 60's like cinemascope. I need to retrain my brain to embrace films in eras where special effects were primitive at best. If I can enjoy a 007 special featuring the great Sean Connery being flanked by laughably antiquated special effects, then I think there's hope. I bow at your feet Bogey. I bow at your feet Jimmy Cagney. It's time for more indie brain food and more documentaries and more history books. I need to get to know historical figures like my guy Abe Lincoln a bit more. The time for all things junk food needs to stop. No more crap like "Fifty Shades of Gray" and no more crap like "Message in a Bottle." No more F Bombs for awhile, just brain food and stuff that's good for my soul. I'm changing my ways.... right after I finish watching an ultra violent revenge tale with plenty of foul language and fabulous CGI effects and gorgeously modern cinematography. Good night America.
